The Division 2, tips for earning expertise simplified by gaining proficiency with all gear item slots.

‘Non Proficient Every Slot’ Build

Proficiency 0 - 9 ranks earn Expertise Points 0/140 (in example used below) earns Expertise ranks 1 - 30

Note when The Division 2 has many new gear items they raise the expertise rank cap like recently it went up from 28 to 30.

There are many ways to earn expertise in The Division 2, this post will showcase a simple method that works pretty efficiently. Expertise is the slowest grind aka power creep system, ranks 1 - 30 may take players years of play time to get. Basically after earning expertise you can then apply the current rank to gear items and after continue upgrading up to rank 30. So at rank 30 on a weapon you would have earned +30% Weapon Damage, rank 12 +12% Weapon Damage, skills can have various stats increased like damage/healing/duration, gear like helm/chest etc. have +Armor.

To gain these ranks first you need to make each piece of gear ‘Proficient’ which has levels from 0 - 9. this is earned from playing the game and getting kills while the gear is actively being used. This is what this method is based off of, making every slot of your current load out non proficient to increase the earning potential.

DETAILS AND TIPS

1. All gear slots with non proficient items to earn the most proficiency. Weapons, Skills, Gear, Specialization.
2. Proficiency = Expertise, as you become proficient with more gear items you earn expertise points which then earns ranks.
3. Goal is always to be earning proficiency points and play the game.
4. Yes your performance will be lowered, survival might be tougher.
5. Play open world events, lower the games difficulty if needed.
6. Not recommended for new players, should understand the games mechanics and how enemies spawn.
7. Play this setup as if you were a glass canon, use cover and play carefully.
8. The game drops so much loot all the time its easy to do this.
9. Now when you get new loot check it for proficiency, if its non proficient then its a keeper to use later for leveling.
10. Named items ‘’The Chainkiller’ may have a separate proficiency even if it has a set brand name like ‘Walker and Harris’ you have already made proficient. Named item ‘Punch Drunk’ with ‘Douglas and Harding’ set brand helm and a normal ‘Douglas and Harding’ gloves non named each will earn a separate proficiency. Another note having one piece of a set brand equipped does make the entire brand set proficient, like just having strikers gloves equipped gains proficiency for entire set so you don't need 6 pieces of strikers equipped anyway.
11. Once a piece of gear maxes out to rank 9 it is proficient, change it to another non proficient piece and carry on to keep earning.
12. Once you gain expertise you can add it to your gear, recommend only best weapons at first.
13. To add expertise to gear requires many resources, then even more the higher the rank. The grind has many levels.
14. Expertise in this order, best weapons, best skills, armor is not recommended due to high cost of resources. Yea I added expertise to some armor gear items with blue cores for my tank set, increased armor.
15. Make sure not to use a full brand set like strikers chest/backpack equipped , you want every slot to earn its own proficiency. Using multiple equipment slots with brand set may slow down your earning potential, this I am not fully sure of though.
16. Skills have multiple variants each having their own proficiency, like Explosive Seeker is different than Cluster Seeker.
17. Specialization weapons need to be used or they will earn extremely slow, Grenade Launcher, Flame thrower etc. use them.
18. This info does not fully cover the Expertise system and how to earn resources, search this elsewhere.
19. If you always play with the same build where everything is proficient then you are never gaining expertise. This is usually when players start donating gear/resources like printer filament to earn expertise points which is very slow or very expensive and why I am showcasing this idea.
20. Use all your weapons, they need to be used for kills unlike gear to earn quicker. Say you have two weapons both with 0 proficiency the one you use the most will have the higher proficiency level, tested. In my pic below equipped is a SMG and AR both were originally 0 proficiency, I tend to use the smg more due to its fast firing rpm and talent, it was at proficiency 8, the AR at 6 both equipped at same time.

RESULTS

How fast is this?

Well like many I would put some new gear in my load out and play to earn proficiency instead of donating resources which is another more expensive and time consuming way to gain ranks. Like a secondary weapon I would barely ever use, it still earns if its in my active gear slots while playing. Then I got to thinking why not do every slot non proficient gear?

Speed observations, non scientific just my normal session.

1. At a fresh expertise 19 rank I had played two days and gained 11/140 points needed to hit expertise 20 rank with just a secondary weapon and pistol being non proficient, yes just two gear items earning proficiency.

2. At expertise 19 with 11/140 points to start with all non proficient gear in two hours I had went to 58/140. All gear slots non proficient. Basically I could have potentially gained a full expertise rank if I played a bunch in a day.

Expertise Points: 11 vs 47
Time Spent: Two days (best guess 8-10 hours) vs Two hours!

Conclusion 11 expertise points in two days with two items vs 47 expertise points in two hours with all items non proficient. This was just doing free roam on challenging and Heroic teams using matchmaking, simple stuff just playing the game. A note all my specialization weapons are already proficient so the gains could be higher when not, but keep in mind some specialization unlock new skills. Another thing is there are 4 extra skills locked behind manhunt missions, look them up like emp sticky from Hornet manhunt.

Your results could be much better than mine, get in a good free roam group that grinds activities non stop this could be so much better.

My first all non proficient gear slot build shown in pic below, was decent with 1.1m health. Keep in mind if you have lots of non proficient gear lying around you can pick the best stats/talents items that will work together best, like in my setup here went with a hybrid skill build with 4 tiers. I always keep good rolls of various gear so had a ton in my stash already. Explosive seeker and booster hive skills, each of these I hardly ever used in my normal gaming

I will add more new posts as I test a few other things here too.

Screenshot of expertise level and points graphics, notice I am proficient with 293/433 total gear items in the entire game. I have to reiterate that this all non proficient gear build method is even faster than my example, my second day is going faster on even easier content.

Other expertise methods.
  1. Loot Goblin, farm named/any gear that is un proficient, junk and donate.
  2. Buy multiple named/any un proficient gear from vendors, junk and donate.
  3. Research various un proficient gear in expertise menu using resource materials recommend printer filament.
